iSea: Conservation of Posidonia seagrass meadows in Greece<\/h1>\n

Seagrass meadows are found all over the world and are among the most productive ecosystems in the sea. They contribute to coastal protection against erosion, provide food, are habitats with high biodiversity and nurseries for numerous marine animals.<\/p>\n

However, seagrass meadows are threatened in many places by construction, destructive fishing techniques, introduced seagrasses and the anchoring of a large number of recreational vessels. This is also the case in the Mediterranean Sea, where the Posidonia seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) is native and an important foundation of biodiversity.<\/p>\n

The Greek organisation\u00a0iSea<\/a> (Environmental Organisation for the Preservation of the Aquatic Ecosystems) is studying the condition of the Posidonia seagrass meadow in a pilot area in the Aegean Sea and will test various restoration measures through experimental plantings. The results will contribute to a more effective management of the seagrass ecosystem, as there is a great need for sustainable restoration approaches. Accordingly, the results of this project can be directly applied to similar projects in the Mediterranean to better protect Posidonia seagrass meadows in the future.
