Project Manaia: Exploration and protection of Neptune seagrass meadows in the Mediterranean<\/h1>\n

Seagrass meadows are found all over the world and are among the most productive ecosystems in the sea. They contribute to coastal protection against erosion, provide food, are habitats with high biodiversity and nurseries for numerous marine animals. We are working with the organization Project Manaia to restore their populations.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seagrass meadows are severely threatened by damming, destructive fishing techniques, introduced seagrasses and the anchoring of a large number of recreational vessels. This is also the case in the Mediterranean, where the Neptune seagrass meadow (Posidonia oceanica) is native. It is an important basis of biodiversity in this intercontinental sea, but it is endangered.<\/p>\n

The Austrian organization Project Manaia<\/a> has been investigating the distribution and status of Neptune seagrass meadows in the Mediterranean since 2018. In addition to mapping and quantification, various variables that affect seagrass growth are being analyzed. Interested persons can participate in this project and help with the research work on board the sailing vessel Waya Waya.<\/p>\n

Project Manaia initiated and leads a network of NGOs, exchange schools and research centers dedicated to replanting Neptune seagrass to help this important part of the ecosystem survive. KYMA sea conservation & research is very pleased to be part of the Posidonia network and to contribute to the revival of seagrass meadows in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n
