Inverto Earth: Reforestation of mangroves<\/h1>\n

Mangroves form an ecosystem that plays a key role for our planet: they protect the climate, provide a nursery for marine life, and act as a bulwark against erosion and storm surges. We are cooperating with Inverto Earth<\/a> to preserve Indonesia’s mangrove forests.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Compared to tropical rainforests, mangrove forests can sequester up to five times more CO\u2082 per hectare, not only in their biomass but also in the soil. This so-called \u201cblue carbon\u201d is locked away in sediment for centuries and plays a central role in global climate protection.<\/p>\n

Mangrove forests are indispensable for countless marine creatures. Their roots provide shelter and food for young fish, crabs, mussels, and even sharks. Many species that later live in coral reefs or the open sea spend their early years in these protected waters. Without mangroves, entire food chains would collapse. Fishing communities around the world would also be affected. Mangroves therefore represent not only biodiversity, but also the livelihoods of millions of people.<\/p>\n

However, mangrove forests are under threat. An estimated 30-50% of the world’s mangrove forests have been destroyed in the last 50 years, mainly due to deforestation, for example to establish shrimp farms, pollution, and climate change.<\/p>\n

Swiss start-up Inverto Earth aims to reverse the negative trend of human impact on coastal habitats by carrying out mangrove reforestation in collaboration with local stakeholders. KYMA sea conservation & research is delighted to be able to contribute to the protection of mangrove forests in Indonesia and to climate protection through our collaboration with Inverto Earth.<\/p>\n
