Whale stranding at Lake Zurich

From August 19 to 21, 2024, Zurich’s Utoquai was home to an unusual sight: a beached sperm whale lay on the lake shore. But whales don’t live in Lake Zurich, they live in the world’s oceans. The stranding was a production by the Belgian artists’ collective Captain Boomer. Together with Zürcher Theater Spektakel, KYMA has brought the whale to Zurich.

We are drawing attention to the fact that marine conservation also affects a landlocked country like Switzerland. The effects of our consumer decisions or our CO2 emissions have a global impact, including on the oceans. Governments and corporations in particular have a responsibility: their actions can massively damage or even destroy the marine habitat. Environmental crimes such as large-scale plastic and oil pollution or overfishing can lead to the death and ultimately the stranding of marine animals such as whales.
